Project: The redevelopment of a classic two-story downtown retail building in the Town of South Boston, Virginia. The roof had partially collapsed and the Town leadership partnered with the Developer to save this building.

The two-story, red-brick Main Street Commercial-style building at 300 Main Street has a modified storefront that angles to a recessed central entry door, three bays of second floor windows, and decorative brick corbeling near the cornice. The corbeling and brick pilasters give the second floor the appearance of being recessed from the rest of the facade. The side elevation facing Arch Street has a stepped parapet and regular bays of stacked first and second floor windows.

The building at 300 Main Street is typical of the mass, height, building materials, and fenestration patterns of commercial buildings located in the South Boston Historic District, and it clearly contributes to the character of the district. The 2009 district update notes that the area is “representative of the town[‘s] industrial, commercial, and residential development from the mid-nineteenth century to the 1930s.” The Period of Significance for the South Boston Historic District is 1800-1958.
